Instagram vs Google vs AI: Where Customers Actually Find Businesses Now
A customer looking for your business today has more ways to find you than ever — and they're using all of them. Some open Google. Some scroll Instagram. A fast-growing number just ask ChatGPT. Understanding where your customers actually look, and how each channel works, is the difference between being found and being missed. Here's what the current data shows about the three biggest discovery channels — and how to think about each.
Google: still the front door for most customers
Despite all the disruption, Google remains the default starting point for finding a business. Research from Fractl and Search Engine Land found Google is the first stop for the majority of consumers looking for local businesses, and BrightLocal's data continues to show Google as the most trusted source for business information. When people make a purchase decision, Google is still where the largest share turn first.
But Google itself is changing. Its AI Overviews — the AI-generated summaries at the top of results — now appear for a large share of local searches, and studies have found them showing up in roughly 40% of local business queries. Google's AI Mode has passed a billion monthly users. So "being on Google" increasingly means being in Google's AI answer, not just its list of links. The takeaway: Google is still essential, and your Google Business Profile remains one of the highest-value assets you own — but the game is shifting from ranking to being included in the answer.
Instagram and social: discovery through inspiration
Instagram and other social platforms play a different role in how customers find businesses. People rarely open Instagram to search for a plumber, but they constantly discover businesses there through inspiration — a beautiful salon transformation, a friend's recommendation, a local business that keeps showing up in their feed. Social platforms are increasingly functioning as local discovery engines in their own right, and younger customers in particular lean on them more heavily than older generations do.
Social's strength is visual, emotional, and trust-building: it's where customers fall for your brand, see proof of your work, and decide they like you before they ever search your name. The takeaway: Instagram isn't where most people search, but it's where they get inspired and build familiarity — and that familiarity often sends them to Google or AI to look you up. A strong, consistent social presence feeds the other channels.
AI tools: the fastest-growing channel almost nobody's ready for
Here's the shift that should get your attention. According to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, the share of consumers using AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to find local business recommendations jumped from around 6% to roughly 45% in a single year. AI is now reported to be the third most-used local discovery channel, behind only Google and Facebook — having overtaken long-standing players like Yelp and TripAdvisor. Adoption is especially high among customers aged 30 to 44, prime buyers for many service businesses.
Yet the same research suggests the vast majority of local businesses have no strategy for appearing in AI results. And there's a catch: appearing in AI recommendations is reportedly much harder to achieve than ranking in Google's local results, and fewer than half the businesses that lead on Google also show up in AI answers. In other words, your Google success does not guarantee AI visibility. The takeaway: AI is where the growth is and where the competition is thinnest — a rare combination that creates a real first-mover advantage.
How the three channels work together
These aren't competing choices; they're a connected journey. A typical customer might see your work on Instagram, look you up on Google to check reviews and details, and ask ChatGPT for a recommendation to confirm their choice — sometimes all in the same afternoon. Being strong in one channel and absent in another breaks the chain. The businesses that win are visible across all three, telling a consistent story wherever a customer happens to look.
Where you should focus
- Nail your Google Business Profile first — it's still the highest-traffic, most-trusted channel and it feeds AI answers too.
- Build a consistent Instagram presence to create inspiration, proof, and familiarity that drives customers to look you up.
- Move early on AI visibility, because adoption is exploding and almost no competitors are optimizing for it yet.
- Keep your information identical everywhere, since all three channels reward consistency and punish contradictions.
- Earn reviews relentlessly, because reviews power your ranking, your social proof, and what AI says about you.
The bottom line
Google is still the front door, Instagram is where customers fall for you, and AI is the fast-rising channel your competitors are ignoring. You don't have to choose — and you can't afford to. The winning move is a connected presence across all three, anchored by consistent information and a steady stream of reviews, so that whichever way a customer chooses to look, your business is the one they find.
